"Late autumn garden"

- I think graphics and animation can bring shorts and documentaries to another level, if they fit, but they should not overload the video, says multimedia talent and student Clement Wirth.

Graphics and animation has also a place in storytelling. Clemens Wirth is an talented young man studying multimedia art at the FH-Salzburg in Austria, and has posted a few videos on Vimeo with a combination of graphics and video. He also share some thoughts about the process and using graphics in shorts and documentaries.

- I think graphics and animation can bring shorts and documentaries to another level, if they fit, but they should not overload the video. I also think they can call attention to certain details which you may not see and of course: it looks important, says Wirth.

- Before the Canon 5D Mark II, I worked with the Canon XL2, but for my purpose the 5D is simply perfect - so I exchanged them. The DSLR camera is so easy to transport; you can change lenses, play with the depth of field, make stunning photos and record in HD all in one machine and the H.264 movies makes the postproduction workflow quite easy.

- I think there is not really a typical story in "late autumn garden", but I guess you could say that it's about the autumn turning into winter, mixed up with some powerful music, my own textinterpratation of what I see in this images and some animated animals or insects which do not really fit into the scenery.

- Last year I saw the off main titles 2009 from Prologue and I was so impressed, that I thought I want to make a short video which goes into that direction, but more in the macro section. I had some sort of concept in my head, but not really a plan.

- As in most of my videos this was an one-man-project, so I had not to follow any rules. I experimented a little bit and let things happen - sometimes this method works :)

- This was an hobby project. I had no guidelines or pressure, just for fun, tells.

- It was shot with Canon 5D Mark II, equipped with an 100mm macro lens. For some shots I also used the kit lens, the 24-105 mm.

He also got interviewed at the site canon5dtips.com. Heres a snippet of the interview. Be sure to check out their great site!

"He shot almost everything with the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5X Macro (this one was easy to guess) with one sequence from the 100mm f/2.8 Macro.

He also used the Z-finder to achieve critical focus. Having played with macro videography in the past, I was curious about his lighting setup and I was quite surprise by its simplicity: two 100 watts bulbs for indoor shots and the sun for the rest"!
