"This Land" - a cold, interactive multimedia essay

Håvard Ferstad

In March 2007, seven Canadian and Inuit rangers and documentary filmmaker Dianne Whelan set out to cover more than 2,000 km of the harshest terrain on the planet.

In This Land, they confront blizzards, labyrinths of crushed sea ice and near-impassable glaciers, with temperatures hovering around -50°C, to raise the Canadian flag at Ward Hunt Island.

Whelan's journey is a truly immersive experience, with full-browser images, video clips and slick interactivity, and a unique soundtrack featuring throat singer and narrator Tanya Tagaq. Watch the video below for a glimpse of her work with the Kronos Quartet.

This Land is produced by digital creative studio Wallop. The interactive documentary is a finalist for the 2010 Online Journalism Awards in the category "Multimedia Feature Presentation, Small Site".
